Barnum Ice Rink Closed
** The Barnum Park Ice Rink is closed due to mild temperatures. Keep an eye on this site for updates. **
The Barnum Park outdoor ice rink (installed last year as a trial to gauge public interest in an outdoor skating facility) was an overwhelming success. Members of the Birmingham community and surrounding areas expressed favorable opinions about the rink, which was highly utilized last winter. We're pleased to open it again this year and hope the community will enjoy it again this winter. Download the ice rink rules here. The City would like to thank the following individuals and organizations whose financial contributions last year made the outdoor rink possible:
Birmingham Estates Neighborhood Association Birmingham YMCA Rex & Janelle Boyce Nicolette Heister Howarth Neighborhood Association Edward A. Katz Mill Pond Neighborhood Association Pembroke Neighborhood Association Pierce Elementary School Community Education Foundation Pierce-St. James Neighborhood Association Presidents’ Council of Neighborhood Associations
Summertime at Barnum
Stop by Barnum Park (located at Pierce and Frank) next summer and enjoy the park's excellent features, such as: play structures, soft ball and soccer fields, beautiful crushed stone walking paths, garden sanctuary, tree-lined promenade, etc. Finishing touches are still being completed at this time.
Natural Areas As you walk through the park you'll notice several areas where plant and grass clusters have grown tall. These natural areas, which contain native plantings, are part of the park’s master plan; this element is designed to enhance the natural feel and appearance of the park. As we allow these natural areas to grow and develop over time, the park’s beauty will also intensify. The city will continue to monitor and evaluate these areas in the coming months. Re-seeding and modifications will be made as needed.
City Maintenance Please note that as park development comes to a close and with the contractor’s duties completed, city staff has assumed the responsibility of maintaining several unfinished areas, such as the grass in the soccer fields and along the perimeter of the park. Over the coming months the city will work on grass cutting, watering and applying weed treatment to unfinished areas. Additional shrubs will also be planted as needed. We appreciate your patience, as the park will look increasingly beautiful as we allow necessary time for healthy grass to fill in. Please stay on designated walkways to protect the newly planted grass and natural areas with native plantings.
