Sustainable development incorporates the concepts of economic development and environmental protection, implying that neither should occur at the expense of the other. The term "sustainability" was coined in the World Commission on Environment and Development report called "Our Common Future" (also known as the Brundtland Report).

The Brundtland Report defined sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." The term encourages businesses, organizations, and individuals to make decisions that are sensitive to the needs of the environment while promoting economic viability.
