Trash Collection

Important Trash Information

Birmingham's trash brochure offers detailed information about trash guidelines. Trash is picked up in Birmingham on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Use the map below to determine your trash day.

Did you know we have year-round FREE Bulky Item Pickup! That’s right - simply place your large items at the curb on your trash pickup day.

Attention early birds! Trash collection begins promptly at 7:00 a.m., so be sure to have your trash/recyclables/yard waste at the curb on time. (You may place your rubbish at the curb 12 hours prior to your pickup. For example, if your trash day is Wednesday, you may place your rubbish at the curb no earlier than 7 pm on Tuesday evening).

The City Picks Up the Following:

  • Household refuse. Refuse must be in approved containers.
  • Yard Waste (pick up runs mid-April through the third Friday in December). Access winter yard waste disposal information.
  • Five containers per week of construction materials (i.e. lumber, tile, linoleum, etc. no concrete or brick).
  • All refuse containers must be no heavier than 60 lbs.
Approved Refuse Containers:
  • 20-30 gallon garbage cans
  • Bushel baskets
  • Plastic bags - at least 2 mils thick, trash only  (no yard waste)
  • Brown paper biodegradable bags - grass and leaves only
  • Take your containers inside within 24 hours after collection.

Holiday Schedule
When New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day occur on a weekday, collection for the remaining days of that week will be one day late

Collection of Trees and Shrub Branches
Stack branches with cut ends 1 " to 4" in diameter and longer than four (4) feet at the curb, with cut ends facing in the same direction (preferably the direction of traffic flow). Between March and November, the city chipper will collect and grind these routinely - one complete cycle of the city usually takes approximately two weeks.

Put out branches smaller than 2" in diameter and less than 4' long - bundled together and tied securely with your regular refuse. You may also put out small logs, roots and stumps in approved containers and subject to weight restrictions.

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees will be picked up during the first two weeks of January. After that, trees may be picked up on a limited call-in basis. Please remember to remove the base, lights, ornaments, etc. Call the DPS at 248.530.1700 for more information.
